The chin strap attaches to the snaffle bit with buckle fastenings. Since the snaffle bit is designed for lateral flexion and allows for the use of one rein at a time, the chin strap's purpose is to prevent the bit from being pulled through the horse's mouth. There are three adjustment holes on each side for a proper fit.
When using a snaffle, a leather chin strap takes on a different role (compared to the curb strap). It prevents the opposite ring from being pulled through the horse's mouth when direct reining, rather than functioning as a leverage mechanism.
